EL PLANETA DE LOS PENDEJOS
CDMX, MEXICO • 2001
Décimo Festival Internacional de Performance de Ex Teresa Arte Actual
In Mexico the word "pendejo" means pubic hair and stupid at the same time.
This performance of sadomasochism operates at different levels, on the one hand, as a gamble that plays with the meaning, signifier and referent of the word "pendejo". The semiotic game extends to her body, particularly her genitals as signifiers of sexuality. It seems to me that Boliver disarticulates the erotic reception of his body by turning it grotesque. Being naked and yet deformed by the tape, her appearance suggests a striptease taken to the limit of even shedding her skin. The "living flesh" of her body seems to have been subjected to a dissection, which continues with the help of the spectators. This is how sadomasochistic voyeurism becomes a clinical operation that frustrates and excites at the same time. Rocio Boliver explained that she was interested in the public approaching her genitals "in a non-sexual context, in order to demystify them.
